Packing up your garage or shed is one of the more difficult parts of the moving process. Generally, these items don't lend themselves to being packed very easily. There are a few specific procedures, however, that will make moving this area of your house a lot simpler.

In order to pack up your garage or shed, you're going to need a few things:

• Packing tape
• Shrinkwrap
• 1.5-cubic-foot "small" cartons
• Bubble wrap or old towels/rags
• Packing paper
• Twine
• Permanent marker

How to Pack Up Your Garage or Shed

One of the first things you need to know about packing up your garage or shed is what not to pack. Flammable or dangerous liquids are at the top of this list. That means if you have any outdoor equipment that runs on gasoline, you'll need to drain that and the oil out of it before packing and shipping. Any sharp blades (such as those on a lawnmower or chainsaw) should have blade covers on them. Be sure to pack all attachments separately in a box to themselves.

Hardware (nuts, bolts, screws, etc.) should be kept in a hardware bag or coffee can and labeled properly. These can be packed in a small carton using packing paper to fill in any gaps.

Loose tools of the same length should be bound together with twine. If you are going to pack them in a carton, wrap them in shrinkwrap to keep any grease or rust from getting on anything, then wrap them in a few sheets of packing paper. Sharp-edged tools should be wrapped in old towels or bubble wrap, then wrapped in packing paper. Put them in a small carton, as they are heavy items.

If you keep your tools in a tool box or case, they can be left inside of it. Fill the empty space in the tool box with crushed paper. Loose power tool attachments should be packed separately from the tools themselves.

Long-handled garden tools can be bundled together with twine and wrapped in a packing blanket. Tape around the blanket to hold the bundle securely together.

With each of these cartons, place one final layer of packing paper on top of everything as cushioning. Then, seal the box with tape. Finish by labeling the box with its contents and destination.
